North Topsail Beach's Fall Calendar Turns Over in a Single Week

North Topsail Beach's Fall Calendar Turns Over in a Single Week

When does summer actually end on North Topsail Beach? The town code gives one answer. On October 1, the driving window at the north end gets shorter. Then the calendar gives a second answer, which comes almost four weeks later and all at once. Between Monday, October 26, and Tuesday, November 3, the island's weekly market closes for the year, the town's biggest fall gathering takes over Richard Peters Park, a Halloween pub crawl runs from midday to midnight, and the entry fee for the fall fishing tournament goes up.

The island doesn't slow down gradually in fall. It runs on a set of end dates, and most of them land in the same eight days. Knowing those dates is the difference between catching the last good stretch of the island's season and finding out about it the following Tuesday.

October 1 moves the north-end clock

The first change is easy to miss because nothing looks different. The town's 4x4 driving area runs along New River Inlet at the north end of the island. Under the town code, permitted vehicles can drive there from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. between April 1 and September 30. Starting October 1, the hours shrink to 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and they stay that way through March 31.

That costs two hours of evening light just as sunsets start coming earlier, and an hour off the morning start. If you fish the inlet end after work, your window gets noticeably smaller starting tomorrow. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed in the area. The town code says current property owners enter with a valid hurricane re-entry pass, and non-residents pay the daily, weekly, annual or early-bird fees set in the town's fee schedule. If your re-entry pass is in a kitchen drawer instead of your truck, now is the time to move it.

The town's own website is new too. North Topsail Beach announced a redesigned site going live on Wednesday, September 16. The town said navigation would feel familiar while accessibility and security improved. If an old bookmark sends you somewhere strange this fall, that's why.

Tuesday is the island's busiest morning, until October 27

The North Topsail Beach Artisan Market is in its first season. It opened March 31 and runs every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., across the street from Villa Capriani at 790 New River Inlet Road. Its last day is October 27. Market executive director Melanie Birkholz told the Jacksonville Daily News that the market brings in a fresh mix of artisans each week. She also said it fills a gap left by the island's limited retail.

That gap is the reason the end date matters. For seven months, Tuesday mornings gave the north end a place to shop for coastal art, handmade jewelry and island-made crafts without driving off the island. After October 27, that option is gone until the market's next season.

Splash by the Sea built its Tuesday around the market. The restaurant sits at 790 New River Inlet Road and posts Tuesday breakfast hours of 8 to 11 a.m., with service starting again at 11:30 a.m. for the rest of the day. Its events calendar lists "Artisan Market & a Splash of Breakfast!" every Tuesday in October and stops on the 27th.

Here is the island's week from Splash's October calendar, carried into the first days of November:

Day What's on Through
Sunday Music Bingo, 7 p.m. Listed through Nov. 1
Tuesday morning Artisan Market & a Splash of Breakfast Last listing Oct. 27
Tuesday evening Trivia, 7 p.m. Listed through Nov. 3
Wednesday Splash Bistro Night Listed through Nov. 4

The calendar shows the change clearly. On Tuesday, November 3, trivia still runs at 7 p.m., but the morning listing is gone. The evening routine continues into November. The morning routine ends with the market.

The festival weekend comes first, just off the island

Autumn With Topsail fills the middle weekend of the month. The 37th festival runs October 16, 17 and 18 at 720 Channel Boulevard in Topsail Beach. It opens Friday at 6 p.m. and features regional artists, music and food. Organizers offer shuttles and don't allow pets, except trained service animals. That means a dog-free weekend. It also sets up the next big event, because the town's late-October event is built around pets.

The festival is a short drive south, in the neighboring town. Since it falls ten days before the Artisan Market closes, an artist you find on Channel Boulevard could still turn up at a Tuesday market on New River Inlet Road before the season ends.

The eight days that decide the season

This is the stretch where the island's fall calendar actually turns over. In order:

  1. Monday, October 26. The last day to register for the Topsail Fall Surf and Pier Fishing Challenge at $75. After that, the fee goes up to $85.
  2. Tuesday, October 27. The final Artisan Market of 2026, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  3. Friday, October 30. The town's Annual Pet Parade & Costume Contest at Richard Peters Park.
  4. Saturday, October 31. The Beach Bums Halloween Pub Crawl, 1 p.m. to 11:59 p.m., starting from 4021 Island Drive.
  5. Tuesday, November 3. Trivia at Splash. It's the first Tuesday without a market.

Friday is the event the town itself has the most invested in. The town's announcement calls this year's Howl-O-Ween "bigger than ever," with more food trucks, face painters, and costume contests in five categories: Cutest, Most Original, Funniest, Scariest and Best Overall. Check-in runs from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. Entry costs one non-perishable food item for Share the Table. Bring lawn chairs, because the town is showing Hocus Pocus at 7:15 p.m. Register your pet ahead of time through the town's online form, linked from the announcement.

The timing works in your favor. Check-in closes at 5:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 7:15 p.m., which leaves almost two hours for the parade, judging and food trucks. The pub crawl starts the next afternoon at 1 p.m., so you can do the parade Friday and Beach Bums Saturday without the two events overlapping. Beach Bums posts daily opening hours starting at 11 a.m. and a Thursday-through-Sunday breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m.

The fishing calendar runs past the end of October

The fall fishing season is the one part of the island calendar that keeps going after these eight days. The Topsail Fall Surf and Pier Fishing Challenge runs November 6 through 8 across North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach. Registration headquarters is in the East Coast Sports parking lot. The $10 fee increase after October 26 is the only reason to sign up early, and it's an easy one.

For a warm-up close to home, SeaView Fishing Pier at 124 Fishing Pier Lane charges $2 a day to walk on and $17 a day to fish with up to two poles. Fishing passes expire at 6 a.m. A September 30 report from topsail.fish credits SeaView's September action to the finger-mullet migration, with Spanish mackerel, bluefish, trout, black and red drum, sheepshead and sea mullet all biting. East Coast Sports' September report in Fisherman's Post said casting jigs were catching Spanish mackerel and bluefish from Topsail's surf and piers, and that the fall king mackerel bite hadn't started yet.

What comes next is a seasonal pattern, not a catch report. A September column in Coastal Review lists red drum, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and king mackerel as fall targets along the coast, and says speckled trout stay an option into November. That puts the tournament weekend right in the trout season, and inside the 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. driving window at the inlet end.

SeaView hasn't posted a closing date for the season. A local pier guide published September 13 describes it as open 24 hours a day during peak fishing season. The pier's restaurant serves breakfast until 11 a.m. and lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. until close. If you're planning a November morning around either one, call ahead.

One more date with the same deadline feel

The Army Corps of Engineers is accepting public comment through October 19 on its draft study for the New River Inlet shoreline, and the town's notice links to the Corps' submission system. The hearing was held September 22 at Town Hall, 2008 Loggerhead Court. Coastal Review reported that it drew a standing-room-only crowd to the aldermen's chamber. The final environmental impact statement is expected in March 2027. If you have something to say about the north end, where the 4x4 area and the inlet meet, your deadline is a week before the market's last Tuesday.

Put every date in one place and the plan is simple. Register for the tournament by Monday, October 26. Visit the market and have breakfast at Splash on Tuesday, October 27. Bring a costumed pet and a food donation to Richard Peters Park by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30. Spend Saturday afternoon at Beach Bums. Then plan November around the fishing tournament and whatever the trout are doing.

Timing a fall sale or purchase on Topsail Island works on the same principle as this calendar: the deadlines are fixed, and they decide what's still possible.
